Frequently Asked Questions

What's in Burpee? Is it safe for babies?

Burpee has five ingredients: Heeng (asafoetida), Fennel, Spearmint, Roman Chamomile, and Fractionated Coconut Oil as the base. Heeng has been used in Indian households for centuries to relieve gas and colic in babies — a tiny pinch in warm water is still a grandmother's first response to a gassy infant. Fennel relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract and helps trapped gas move out. Spearmint — significantly gentler than peppermint and safe for infants — soothes intestinal cramping. Roman Chamomile calms both the gut and the baby. All four are diluted in Fractionated Coconut Oil, which is lightweight, non-greasy and ideal for infant skin.

Can I use Burpee on a newborn?

Gripe water and colic drops (like simethicone-based Colicaid) are ingested — they go into your baby's stomach directly. Burpee works topically — it is absorbed through the skin and works through the abdominal wall. Burpee has a practical advantage: there is no risk of your baby refusing it, gagging on it, or it interfering with a feed.

How is Burpee different from gripe water or colic drops?

Gripe water and colic drops (like simethicone-based Colicaid) are ingested — they go into your baby's stomach directly. Burpee works topically — it is absorbed through the skin and works through the abdominal wall. Burpee has a practical advantage: there is no risk of your baby refusing it, gagging on it, or it interfering with a feed.

How does Burpee actually relieve colic and gas? How quickly does it work?

Colic and gas pain happen when the gut muscles cramp around trapped air.
Heeng is an antispasmodic — it relaxes the smooth muscle of the intestinal wall, helping trapped gas pass rather than build up.
Fennel contains trans-anethole, which reduces intestinal spasm and has a carminative effect — it helps gas move through and out of the digestive tract. It is endorsed by Germany's Commission E specifically for digestive complaints in infants.
Spearmint soothes gut cramping and has a mild anti-spasmodic action, gentler than peppermint and appropriate for infant use.
Roman Chamomile calms both gut inflammation and the baby's overall distress response — helping them settle even while the gas is still passing.
Most parents notice their baby becoming calmer within 15–25 minutes of a Burpee massage. Gas relief often follows the calming — you may hear your baby pass wind or burp during or after the massage.

What is the difference between colic and normal gas? Does Burpee help with both?

Normal gas is common and usually passes on its own — babies swallow air during feeds and need to burp it out. Colic is a pattern of prolonged, intense crying in an otherwise healthy baby, typically for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week.
Burpee helps with both — it relieves trapped gas and soothes the cramping and distress that make colic episodes so hard for babies and parents.
If your baby's crying is severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever, vomiting, blood in stool or poor weight gain, see a paediatrician — these are signs that something beyond colic may be happening.

Can I use Burpee during or right after a feed?

Yes — and that is often the best time. Applying Burpee and doing a gentle tummy massage 2–3 minutes before a feed can help relax the gut in advance.
Applying it immediately after a feed, before you attempt to burp your baby, combines the product's action with the physical burping process.
Avoid pressing hard on the tummy right after a large feed — keep the massage strokes light and slow. If your baby has severe reflux, speak to your paediatrician before using abdominal massage.

Can I use Burpee if my baby has sensitive skin or eczema?

Fractionated Coconut Oil is one of the most skin-friendly carrier oils available — lightweight, non-comedogenic and well-tolerated by sensitive infant skin.
Before using Burpee for the first time, do a patch test: apply a small amount to the inside of the wrist or ankle, wait 20–30 minutes, and check for any redness or irritation. If none appears, proceed normally.
If your baby has active eczema flares or broken skin, avoid applying Burpee directly on those areas. Roman Chamomile is known for its skin-calming properties.

Is Burpee lab tested? Where can I see the reports?

Yes, it has been tested at an ISO certified lab, meeting international lab testing standards. Here are the reports

How do I store Burpee? How long does it last?

Store Burpee in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — a drawer or bathroom shelf works perfectly. No refrigeration needed.
Keep it away from heat sources and avoid leaving it in a warm car, as heat breaks down essential oils over time. Once opened, use within 12 months.

Can I use Burpee through the full colic period? When does colic usually end?

Yes. Burpee is safe from birth and can be used throughout the colic phase and beyond — any time your baby has gas or digestive discomfort.
Colic typically peaks around 6 weeks of age and resolves on its own by 3–4 months for most babies.
Gas and digestive discomfort continue well past the colic phase as your baby's gut matures, especially when solids are introduced. Burpee can be used for all of this — it is not limited to the colic window.
